Universal Meal Program Update

August 3, 2023

Dear Lafayette School District Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health and high spirits as we approach the beginning of the 23-24 school year.

I’m writing with several updates about our Universal Meal Program, which launched last year and provides free breakfast and lunches to all our students. Our goal is to ensure that no child goes hungry and that all students have the fuel they need to thrive academically and socially.

I extend a warm welcome to all families to try out our new 23-24 menu. Based on feedback from students and families, we have worked to expand the variety of items prepared in our own kitchens. By doing so, we aim to offer meals that cater to different tastes and preferences, ensuring that every student can find something they enjoy.

Starting this academic year, all of our schools will have a fully staffed food services team, along with upgraded facilities. In addition, meal service at Happy Valley and Springhill will take place indoors, enabling us to offer a greater variety of meals and a full salad bar with fresh fruits, vegetables and salads. This change will not only enhance our students’ dining experience, it will greatly reduce the amount of packaging that was required to serve outdoors.

Looking ahead, we have set concrete goals for the coming year. These objectives include: (1 )focusing our menu on fresh and healthy choices that resonate with our students, (2) increasing the number of students who choose a school meal, (3) improving access to meal information, including allergens and nutritional content, through our updated website, and (4) making ongoing enhancements to our food service facilities.

Please check out our Lafayette School District Food Services website to learn more.

You can reach us at [email protected] if you have questions or feedback about our program.

Our ongoing thanks to all our families, and to our PTA and Parent Organizations for their help. We learned so much last year, and look forward to another year of service and ongoing improvement.

Wishing you a wonderful close to the summer and a fantastic start to the 23-24 school year!

Warm regards,

Brent Stephens
